Field Journal Observed on the Seventh Day

Subject: Lucelle Kin: Jack-o’-Lantern Kin Realm: Sporeveil

A museum-quality print of my original graphite drawing, Lucelle, Observed on the Seventh Day.

The Jack-o’-Lantern mushroom (Omphalotus illudens) is a poisonous woodland fungus best known for one extraordinary trait: its gills can emit a faint greenish glow in darkness. This natural bioluminescence has helped give the mushroom its uncanny name, turning an otherwise dangerous fungus into something that seems to carry its own lantern through the forest.

This piece imagines Lucelle of the Jack-o’-Lantern Kin, a nocturnal guide of Sporeveil whose story is rooted in control, uncertainty, and learning to move forward without being able to see the entire path.

Her story slowly becomes one of adaptation rather than certainty: learning that darkness itself is not the danger, and that sometimes the only guidance we are given is enough light for the next step.

“Follow the light when it appears. Do not fear the darkness between.”
