Field Journal Observed on the Eighth Day
Subject: Ulen Kin: Fly Agaric Kin Realm: Sporeveil
A museum-quality print of my original graphite drawing, Ulen, Observed on the Eighth Day.
With its scarlet cap scattered with white flecks, Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) is one of the most recognisable mushrooms in the world. Toxic and psychoactive, it has long been surrounded by folklore involving altered states, visions, trance, and the strange boundary between the ordinary world and the unseen.
This piece imagines Ulen of the Fly Agaric Kin, an inhabitant of Sporeveil whose story is entwined with death, return, and the difficulty of accepting that some endings really are endings.
Around her are symbols of trance and altered perception, studies of the Fly Agaric mushroom and its spores, and one small creature waiting patiently beside her glass.
“Every return spends another tomorrow.”
Printed on 315 gsm smooth 100% cotton archival paper, enhancing the richness of every detail, while its acid- and lignin-free composition is designed to preserve the artwork for generations.
